New tiny house – 2026 : the community hub

the inside of the hub

The community hub

You may know this place as the round house. It is now a community hub.

First intended as a sauna, the round house is the second tiny house that was built on Hästekasen farm, in 2012. It turned out to be too complicated to heat, and was used as an accomodation for volunteers and guests instead.

When the Dutch family settled in the main “Red house”, the association needed a new community place that fulfills essential collective functions. There is a shower, with a water heater and a water pump, a laundry station with a washing machine, and a kitchen, with a stove, a fridge, and a sink for dishwashing. There is also some storage areas as well as a few chairs for chatting while cooking.

The logistical hub will also cater for AirBnB guests.

A full year of work, with the help of several volunteers, was put into transforming the round house place into such a place. Here is the result.

WARNING! The water is not drinkable, it comes from the pond.

A house building show case

The building itself is a show case house of many different building techniques with natural materials.

First of all, the house is round… with a reciprocal roof beams that allows a round window at the top. On top of the roof lies straw, waterproofed with a pond liner covered with soil and grass.

The whole structure is timber frame, with round logs. Walls are either strawbale with clay/sand surface, or light clay /chopped straw mixed with clay/sand, or cordwood masonry (also called stacked firewood building), and lastly a part of logs.

The floor was initially a (failed) clay floor. Wooden planks were put on top, but slowly decomposed with humidity over the years. As did the lower logs that had to be replaced. Today, there is a brand new floor with grinded wooden planks that is ventilated.

The laundry – shower – water pump section has the luxury of a cement and glasfiber floor. Here, modernity meets some alterative traditional building methods ! And all appliances (“white ware” as we call it in Sweden) is second hand.

We learn from trials and mistakes. This makes the community hub the perfect place to teach several natural building techniques. It is included in our study visits.

A challenging work

Creating the hub and all its functions for the community was a challenge on many levels.

The plumbing system

In Sweden, there is frost during winter. To protect the plumbing system, pipes had to be dug down, and places for emptying them in case they are not used during the frosty season were implemented.

It is the first time at Hâstekasen that the water system for laundry, shower and dish washing is separated from the usual drinking water system. We use our pond water (be careful, it is not drinkable).

The electrical system

Four of our tiny houses have an off grid 12V electric system. But for essential community functions used by the collective, it was convenient to have a central hub that offers the comfort of 220V electricity.

The 220V system is distributed through three phases that had to be calibrated : in order to avoid over using any of the phases, the heavy electricity users (basically, everything that heats) had to be spread out.

So a new electrical substation was built.

The Siam boat adventure

Siam boat taking in water in the sunny harbour

Our fishing boat Siam acquired last summer went through some hardships this winter.

Our fishing boat sinking

With a hole in the hull, it was close to sinking several times. But thanks to the interventions of Martijn, Sebastian and Agne, Siam was saved.

Equipped with a brand new water pump, connected to a battery charging with a solar pannel installed for the occasion, it now remains dry. Some freediving and dry work are planned this summer to fix the hole once and for all.

But there was still a big problem to solve.

The engine problem

The Volvo Penta diesel engine that had been under water was not functionning anymore. It would simply not start.

Sebastian bought a new starter motor, and with some work together with Jeanne and Chat GPT, the other causes of the problem were investigated.

The injector chambers were inspected, the injectors themselves got tested in Gothenburg, and it turn out that it was the injection pump that stopped the fuel from being delivered.

With some moves that were sometimes random, we finally managed to find a way to start the engine.

Siam back to normal

We were rewarded by hosting the first freediving course of the season, as well as a boat excursion with some Hästekasen residents.

Things are back to normal, and you can enjoy extra quality freediving courses at the farm.

As well as boat tours on Koljö Fjorden.

A Dutch family settling at Hästekasen

The village is growing

At Hästekasen village now live Martijn and Jessica with their two boys Bela and Joes and their dog Bram.

They have left their boat-house in the Netherlands to live on the Swedish country side.

They have made the red house their own and make the neighbourhood liveful and the garden blossom.

Welkom allemaal !

Meet the family

Jessica

Jessica is an artist and art professor. Skilled in many techniques, she is notably passionate about ceramics.

Martijn

Martijn is a farmer who is knowledgeable about both plants and agriculture as well as animals. He especially loves cows.

Bela and Joes

Bela and Joes are not finished with exploring the farm’s treasures.

New projects

As soon as spring began, Martijn and Jessica started farming and exploring the farm’s soil and which crops would thrive best where.

They follow biodynamic farming method and want to start a community supported agriculture system (CSA) where the community and people from outside can harvest a variety of crops.

They have some farm animals, like chickens and ducks, and hopefully cows in the future.

Jessica is also making balms, herb teas and soaps from herbs and flowers from the land.

Around this, they also want to offer educational workshops, both in agriculture and in art – like ceramics and making paint from plants.

New tiny house – 2025 : the Hästekasen library

This summer 2025, Hästekasen members and volunteers have created a new DIY off grid tiny house for the village : a circular wooden library.

The Hästekasen library

The Hästekasen library has a view on a peaceful meadow, a 12 V off grid electrical system, comfy armchairs and a roaring fire stove. It is the perfect place for a lonely read by the window during winter, a fancy fika between friends, a quiet work session on the computer, for a focused chess game and even a meditation session.

Thanks to our concept “one volunteer brings one book” as well as the generous donation from one of our members, the Hästekasen library contains not less than 5000 books of all genres and many languages (even though a majority is in Swedish).

From the floor to the ceiling, you are not finished exploring the richness of this new place !

An off-grid show case

With two solar pannels on the roof and two 12V batteries connected in series, the Hästekasen library is also a pedagogical show case for simple DIY off grid electrical systems. It is included in our study visits.

It is the 4th Hästekasen tiny house to be off grid. You can use the electricity for the lamp as well as charging your phone and computer. Any 12V device can be plugged in.
