About us

A permaculture community of neighbours – a foundation – a tiny house village

THE PERMACULTURE COMMUNITY OF NEIGHBOURS

Depending on season here lives and visits a bunch of people (many during summer, few during winter). We are aiming for a self sustainable traditional homestead. The goal is for those who live here to be able to live and work on and from the land according to ecological principles.

We use permaculture and agroforestry principles. Small scale farming of fruit and berries and vegetables that can be “up scaled” when there is a demand.
Also forestry, producing firewood and building material.
And animals (bees, hens, sheep) experimenting with a holistic agriculture.
We have an interest in understanding traditional farming (pre oil area) and adding modern understanding and methods.

The objective is solving basic human needs with simple, cheap, ecological solutions regarding: water, food, sewage, recycling, compost, warmth, shelter etc. That means lots of work – creativity.

Our activities also include health and personal development and adventures in nature.

We are more of green entrepreneurs than “hippies”, while still appreciating a drum session and some chanting by the fire and yoga in the grass.

This place is DRUGFREE. No tolerance for nicotine nor alcohol dependence.

We are mostly vegetarian. Those who want to eat meat must first show that they can raise/slaughter/butcher/cook the animal in question.

We strive for simplicity: lower comfort and lower standard than usual in Sweden (including outhouse dry toilets, short showers, colder bedrooms, mice, and spiders). Less dependence on technology, lower expenses, more independence, more freedom.

Please keep your phone away when you visit us – let’s try to keep our internet addiction down.

The Hästekasen vision with work revolving around ecological farming and low impact living. It is also combined with outdoor experiences, community life, and health.

THE FOUNDATION

This place is managed through a foundation – the Hästekasen Village foundation, established in July 2025. It concerns some land, infrastructure, parts of a harbour and some movable property. This was a goal we have been pursuing throughout our 15 years of activity as an association.

The general purpose of the foundation is to conduct nature conservation activities and to safeguard and preserve the cultural heritage of small-scale farming. It is done throughout the values and traditions of our permaculture collective.

The goal is to create the right circumstances for a good life for a community of like-minded people on the foundation’s lands.

Some resources are shared through the foundation, but the place encourages independence and private ownership of infrastructure and long leases of privately controlled land. Residents should be creative and DIY minded. There is an “anti-drug policy”.

Read the foundation’s statutes for more details.

Currently the foundation controls one plot of land of 3 hectares, but leases another 8 hectares (approx). It is named as beneficiary in a will for the entire Hästekasen farm, consisting of 14 hectares and at least four dwellings.

The foundation seeks private individuals and other communities to collaborate with concerning its purposes and objectives. Read the statutes. If you are interested, let us know here.

At the moment 8 people are permanently registered here, but some 10-15 members visit regularly over the year.
The semi long term aim is 15 residents and many returning visitors/members.
The long term aim is a community of 70-99 good neighbors.

You can visit activities / events here
You can rent a tiny house here
You can build a tiny house here (if accepted by current residents/board)
You can rent a plot of land here on an annual basis.
You can get a long lease for small plot of land (after trial residency)
You should read the statutes and see what type of membership/residency would suit you.

See the section Stay with us.

THE TINY HOUSE VILLAGE

We see ourselves as a village of like-minded neighbours. The everyday life is managed through a residents’ association.

We share a community hub and sleep in smaller private sheds/wagons/tiny houses.

A tiny house built with natural materials : logs, clay, wood. There is soil on the roof to grow plants.

The foundation’s common facilities are used to conduct certain creative projects and activities related to our collective’s values and the foundation’s purposes.

  • Develop small scale permaculture farming principles.
  • Develop small scale natural eco-building knowledge/skills.
  • Develop self-sufficiency methods.
  • Preserve agro-cultural heritage and traditional regenerative methods ; seek innovative low-technology solutions.
  • Courses, workshops and study visits.
  • Activities that develops the understaning and appreciation of nature. Nature toursim. Adventures and experiences that leads to personal development. Art.

In general, we welcome people and activities that deal with homesteading and simple cheap living close to nature and in harmony with ecosystems. We invite people that are interested in good neighbors or just creative nature based projects.

We are an international community. Foreigners are welcome.

Our “green” approach and way of living is described in more details here.
